Chapter 16: The Bridge

Jud left the house at seven, with a note on the pillow that said Back by noon. Eat something.

He drove east on I-10 in the grey sedan with the window cracked, and the highway was empty except for trucks.

He drove the whole way with both hands at ten and two.

He didn't turn on the radio.

The old bridge over the Neches River lay at the end of a county road past Beaumont, between two stands of pine.

Nobody used it.

The state had built a new one upriver years ago.

This one had a chain across the near end and a sign that said Closed.

Jud parked and stepped over the chain.

The planks were grey and soft.

The river ran below, brown and slow, with mist on it.

The rail on the left side was new, a bright cheap steel.

He walked to the middle and put his hands on it.

He had never been here.

He had been told the place.

He had read the name in a police report and never once driven the road, and in nine years he'd never asked himself why.

He stood with the wind at his face and tried to remember.

There was nothing.

Only a wide white nothing, with a birthday cake in front of it and a plastic cup in his hand.

Then, as he stared at the water, something moved behind the wall.

A voice.
