Chapter 14: Off the Case

I took a picture of the slip with my phone.

F. Linder.

The F was round and fat, with a little hook on top.

I don't make my F's like that. I never have.

"She signed your name," Ross said.

"She signed my name fourteen months ago." I put the phone face down on my knee. "Before any of this. Before his father died."

"She was planning for it."

"She was planning for me."

The next night was a Saturday, and the Northside was full by eight.

Ross came in at nine and took his stool at the end of the counter.

He wasn't in uniform.

He was in a flannel shirt and a canvas coat, and he looked wrong without the green.

"Night off?" I said.

"Something like that."

I didn't get to ask what he meant.

The bell rang, and a gray-haired man in a green uniform jacket walked in from the cold.

He came straight down the counter and stood next to Ross's stool.

"Danner," he said.

"Sir."

"I told you to come to the office."

"I was hungry."

The man looked at me.

He looked at my name tag, which said JOLENE in black marker.

"So this is her," he said.

"We got a call this morning," the man said. "No name. A woman. She says my officer has been sleeping with the woman whose name is on that order slip."

"She says he drove her into Cold Creek. Put her up in a motel. Sits in her diner every night."
