Chapter 19: Delaney's Glove

"Look at that," Delaney said. "A human in my father's study."

She let the pendant swing.

The light from the hall caught it on every turn.

"He gave it to me tonight," she said. "For tomorrow. Nash asked him to keep it safe, and he thought my neck was the safest place."

"You can't wear it," I said.

"I'll wear it on velvet." She smiled. "I've had a ribbon made. Black, to go with my gloves."

She looked at the oilcloth bundle against my chest.

Then at the iron box on the desk, with its silver hasp torn out.

"Oh, Jolene," she said. "That was stupid."

"It's the pack's law," the woman beside me said. "It isn't his."

Delaney turned her head and looked at her for the first time.

"You buried your son in July," she said. "I held your hands. Do you remember?"

The woman went very still.

"You cried on my coat. You said you'd never forgive the humans." Delaney tipped her head. "And here you are, holding the door for one."

"My hands stung," the woman said. "When you held them."
