Chapter 23: I Wait No More
The silver moon turned slowly on its ribbon between his hands.
Two hundred people held still.
I could feel the pull in my chest, stronger here than it had ever been.
It came up through the stone and through my feet and into the middle of me, warm and sure.
His wolf had chosen.
Eight years ago, in a diner in Cold Creek, so had I.
I reached down and took the pendant out of his hands.
I held the silver moon in my bare palm.
It was cold. Just cold.
A sound went around the ring, a long breath out. None of them had ever seen a hand hold it.
Nash looked up at me, and his eyes were all gold, and full.
"Jolene."
"Every time, you asked me to wait," I said.
I said it loud, so the back of the ring would hear.
"I told you to ask me on the stone, where everybody could hear."
"So everybody can hear the answer."
I looked down at him.
"No."
He didn't move.
