Chapter 17: The Road

The hunting lodge belonged to Optimus, and Felix had known it was there for eleven years.

He had counted its rooms on the ride up the hill, and its stores, and the number of Apocalypse warriors who could fit in the hayloft.

None of that was what he was thinking about now.

Lucas sat on the edge of the narrow bed in the upper room with his boots off and his hair full of road dust.

He looked tired, and very young, and he was looking at Felix.

Troy was on the porch with the horses, and Julius was walking the ridge with his warriors.

They had given Felix an hour.

He had not asked for it. They had simply decided, the two of them, without a word, and Troy had slapped him on the shoulder going out.

"There are three hundred men in that valley," Felix said, standing at the foot of the bed with his hands behind his back. "You are going to walk into them tomorrow."

"I'm going to walk into them," Lucas agreed. "And they'll sit."

"You do not know that."

"I'm fairly sure."

"Fairly." Felix swallowed. "I do not like fairly."

Lucas studied his face for a long moment.

"You've never asked me for anything," he said. "Not once. You wait until I give you an order, and then you do it beautifully."

"I like orders. They are simple."

"Then tonight, ask me for something."

Felix's chest tightened.

He had written a hundred lines about this man in his black book, and none of them said what to do with his hands.

"I would like," he said, carefully, "to be the one above you."

"Go on."

"I would like to take you. Slowly. I would like to see your face."

He heard how it sounded and wanted to take it back, and then Lucas smiled at him, slow and bright.

"Good," Lucas said. "That was very good. Come here."

Felix crossed the room in three steps and knelt on the bed.

Lucas's mouth met his before he could think.

It was a hungry kiss, hot and open, tasting of road dust and cold honey, and Felix made a noise against it that he did not recognize as his own.
