I played Rafferty the lunch once, at the kitchen island, with the sound turned low.
He listened to Sherilyn say it was only a little sleep, and he kept both hands flat on the marble until the end.
Then he stood up and walked out onto the terrace without a word.
I found him by the glass rail, with a heavy black binder under his arm and a steel fire bowl at his feet.
The night was cold, and the city lay below us in long gold strings.
"What's that?" I asked.
"The quiet plan."
"The what?"
"The one I'd have used if you hadn't come along."
He did not look at me.
"I've been buying up Hollister's debts for two years, through a company with no name on it."
"The day after your party I would have called every note at once."
"And?"
"And he'd have lost the house and the car and his father's goodwill in a single week, and nobody would ever have known why."
