Chapter 7: The Song
The rehearsal hall was a warehouse behind the Ardmore, with a piano in the middle of the floor and a drummer asleep on a sofa.
Marin sat at the piano in a sweatshirt, with sheet music spread over the lid.
She saw Elliott in the doorway and stopped playing mid-bar.
"Take ten," she said to the room.
The band left without looking at him.
The drummer woke up, saw Elliott's face, and left faster than the rest.
Elliott came across the floor and stopped at the piano.
He held his phone out, with the red heart on the screen.
"That's yours," he said.
Marin glanced at it for a second, and her face did not change.
"My social media is run by the team," she said. "Somebody hearts everything. I've told them a hundred times."
"They heart a photo of me bleeding outside your door."
"It's an automatic setting. Elliott, I swear."
"Number one on that page is five years old. It's me in my old coat, laughing outside your theater, before anyone had heard of you. Somebody took it from inside."
"Fans..."
"Marin."
She stopped.
She looked down at the keys, and then up at him, and her eyes were wet.
"I can't fix that page," she said. "It started on its own. Russ says if I make them take it down it looks like I have something to hide."
"Do you?"
She did not answer.
The pause went on a long time.
"Play me the single," he said.
"What?"
"The one everybody's screaming. 'Stage Door.' I've never heard you sing it all the way through. You always sent me out to the car when you did it."
