Chapter 16: The Shower

She climbed into a taxi without another word and left me alone on the curb.

Jericho met me at the mill door with a first-aid kit already open on the stairs.

He took one look at my cheek and his whole face went flat.

"Who," he said.

"Daphne."

"I'll be back in an hour."

"You will not."

"Thalia."

"Sit down, Jericho. I want a shower, and I want you in it."

He stared at me.

Then he set the first-aid kit on the bottom step with great care, and followed me up the stairs.

The bathroom was an old tiled room at the end of the loft, with a showerhead the size of a dinner plate.

I turned the water as hot as it would go, and steam rolled up the walls.

He undressed me slowly, one button at a time, and I let him.

When he reached the sweatshirt he found the dried blood at my collar and his jaw worked.

"Look at me," I said.

He did.

I put both hands in his beard and held his face.

"I wanted to see her do it," I said. "She hit me on camera, and the man had the lens right on her."

"I know."

"So don't be angry for me. Be here."

His eyes closed for a second.

"I'm here," he said, roughly.

I pulled his shirt over his head myself.
