Chapter 16: Three in the Morning

Rhett's POV

Autumn took my bed and I took the couch, and neither of us slept.

At two in the morning I heard her turn over.

"Rhett."

"I'm awake."

"What else don't I know?"

I sat up in the dark.

I had spent six hours deciding how to answer that, and I still had no good way.

"In April, Lydia texted me," I said.

"It was a number I didn't know. It said I'd never prove what I'd read, and that Clifton would never believe me."

"What did you say?"

"Nothing. I didn't answer."

"Is that all?"

"She also wrote that if I told my mother, she'd say I was lying to get back at the family."

The bed creaked.

"Why didn't you tell me that in the car?"

"Because I was ashamed that I'd kept it. I was a coward for three months."

I made myself keep going.

"That's every fact. I called her clinic on Thursday, the day after we heard the heartbeat. I should have told you that night."

She was quiet a long time.

"Thank you," she said at last. "It doesn't fix it."

"I know."

"Go to sleep, Rhett."

I lay back down and stared at the ceiling.

Across the room I could hear her breathing, slow and uneven.

I wanted to cross the floor more than I had ever wanted anything, and I stayed where I was.
