Chapter 18: Two Names in the Dark
I found him in the nursery at midnight, in the dark, sitting on the floor by the empty cradle.
He had not lit a candle.
The only light was the moon through the slats, laid in bars across his knees and his bare feet.
"I thought you'd be here," I said.
"I cannot sleep in a house where she was never allowed to sleep."
I sat down beside him on the boards.
For a while we listened to the old house settle.
"Saturday," I said.
"Do not."
"I have not said anything."
"You have the voice of a woman who has decided something."
"I will tell them myself, Hugh."
"Before he can."
"I will stand on the stair at your grandmother's ball and say I am Effie Tapper, a laundress from Mill Court."
"Then he has nothing left to read."
"No."
He turned his whole body toward me, and in the moon I saw his face come apart a little.
"They will call you a thief and a cheat in every drawing room in England."
"They will call me a laundress as well."
"I have been called worse by better men on that green."
