Chapter 19: The Premiere
The tuxedo had been let out twice, and it still pulled across Jamie's belly.
"You look like a lawyer," Carly had said, tying his bow tie. "A very pregnant, very expensive lawyer."
"Is that good?"
"It's terrifying. Go."
The flashbulbs started at the curb.
Jamie stepped out of the black car at thirty-four weeks, into a wall of white light and shouting, with Roman's hand on the small of his back.
Four hundred guests in black and gold filled the forecourt of the Aldecott Pictures theater.
The old studio crest hung over the door, ninety years of it in lit brass.
Every head turned.
They saw the man in the black tux with the burned face, who was never photographed.
The young freckled omega with a silver scar above his collar and a round belly under his cummerbund.
The noise dropped by half.
"Mr. Aldecott!" a reporter shouted. "Is this the heir?"
"This is Jamie Hendry," Roman said.
He did not raise his voice.
"He's my mate. He's carrying our daughter. If you want to know anything about the heir, ask him."
The noise came back twice as loud.
Jamie squeezed his hand until his knuckles cracked, and Roman squeezed back.
They did the carpet.
They did the lobby, and the champagne he did not drink, and a hundred polite faces working hard at looking away from a stomach.
At nine, a gold curtain rose on the stage in the main hall.
A spotlight found a single microphone and a tall woman in navy, with a pearl at her throat.
"Friends," Constance Aldecott said. "Ninety years."
The applause was dutiful.
She spoke for six minutes about her grandfather and the first sound stage.
The great pictures, and the family, and every word of it was clear and warm and rehearsed.
Then she turned her head, and found Jamie in the third row, and smiled.
"And I would be remiss," she said, "not to mention our newest arrival."
The hall went still.
"I am told there will be an Aldecott heir by Christmas. I am delighted. It happens that I have had the pleasure of reading the contract by which this heir was commissioned."
