Chapter 20: The Nest, Again
At thirty-eight weeks the nest had taken over the whole top floor.
Jamie had started with shirts.
By the end of the fourth week it included sweaters, towels, three blankets, a pair of Roman's running shoes for reasons he could not explain.
A sofa cushion he'd dragged up two flights of glass stairs while Roman begged him to stop.
"I'm not carrying anything," he said. "I'm supervising."
"You're sweating."
"I'm radiant."
He stood at the center of it in a pair of boxers and an open shirt, barefoot, with his belly out in front of him.
The ache had not gone away.
It sat low in his body, a slow warm pull, and every time Roman walked into a room it flared.
He had thought it was nerves.
He had thought it was the hormones, and the heat that wasn't, and the four weeks since the stage.
It was none of those things.
It was something old and animal and exact, and tonight it knew what it wanted.
"Come here," he said.
Roman, in the doorway with a mug of tea he had been about to hand over, stopped.
"What is it? Is it the baby?"
"It's not the baby. It's me."
He crossed the nest, and took the mug out of Roman's hand and set it on the sill.
He put both palms flat on Roman's chest, and breathed him in.
Smoke, cedar, and the warm musk underneath, and his knees shook.
"I'm not in heat," he said. "I know I'm not. But my body thinks it is, and it's never been so sure. I need you to knot me."
Roman's face changed.
"You can't. Not outside a heat. It isn't safe for a..."
"A pregnant omega near term can," Jamie said. "I looked it up. I read for two nights. The books say it's rare, and the books say it's called the last tie. It means the body is ready."
