Chapter 20: The Bed
Bernie had been planning the party since the first night Malcolm sat down at the corner table.
She would not say how she'd known.
"A woman has instincts," she said, hanging a banner across the front window of the Gull & Kettle that read, in glitter, CONGRATULATIONS, WHATEVER HAPPENED.
By six o'clock the café was packed to the walls.
There were the regulars and the baker from next door.
The white-haired woman from the ballroom had come all the way to Wharf Lane with a box of shortbread.
Even the man in the fleece vest turned up at seven, red to the ears.
He stood in the doorway holding a bunch of grocery-store carnations.
"I'm sorry," he said to Perrin. "I read the paper again. I was out of line."
"Thank you," Perrin said. "What can I get you?"
"A latte?"
"Oat milk?"
"God, no," the man said, miserably. "Whole."
Agnes slipped him a cookie and nodded at the corner table.
Malcolm sat there in his shirtsleeves with a glass of cider, holding court to a ring of laughing directors.
