Chapter 16: The Offer
Teddy found the keys at six the next morning, in the sock nest, under a cat.
Admiral sat on them.
The white pompom stuck out from beneath his belly, and he looked up at Teddy with the calm of a creature that had done something about the world.
"I did not see this," Teddy told him. "I want that on record."
He put the keys in his apron pocket and went to open the shop.
Garrick came back at eleven.
It was a Tuesday, and Understory was full: eighteen customers, two strollers, a man who wanted to know whether ferns could hear.
Garrick walked in through the crowd, with a leather folder under his arm and a pen already out.
"Mr. Dunleavy. Have you had time to think?"
The shop went quiet in patches.
Poppy put down the watering can.
Teddy came out from behind the counter and wiped his hands slowly on his apron.
He had a long speech.
He had prepared it in the shower, in the bed and over the pancakes, and it had five points and a joke.
He looked at Garrick's face, and the speech left the building.
