Chapter 11: The Stamp
"Say it," I said.
Emiliano put the page down on the table.
His hand was not quite steady.
"Six years ago I was a first-year associate at Lund and Pryor," he said. "I was thirty-one. They gave me the forms nobody wanted."
"And?"
"One of those was a template for a durable power of attorney, with a clause for trust access. I typed it, formatted it and sent it up to a partner. I never saw a client's name."
"But you typed it."
"I typed the form," he said. "I did not know what it would be used for."
"You knew it was a form that let someone take everything a person owned."
"I knew it was a form lawyers used for elderly clients."
"My father was sixty-one," I said. "He didn't have a power of attorney. I did. At twenty-five, on my wedding morning, in a bridal suite."
"I know."
"You sat in my kitchen and counted my pulse."
"Yes."
"You let me thank you for carrying a crib."
His jaw worked.
"I found out ten minutes ago," he said. "I swear that to you. I never turned that page over until tonight. The firm line was on the back, and I only knew when I read it."
"You said you'd be sure before you told me anything."
"I wanted to be sure about the money. I wasn't sure about myself."
I stood up.
I was shaking, and I could not tell if it was anger or if it was only that I had been shaking for three weeks and had finally been given a reason.
"Get out of my house," I said.
He didn't argue.
He picked up his folder, set it back on the table, and left it there.
