Chapter 22: The Press Room
The press conference started at ten in the tower atrium, under a banner that said TRUST, LOYALTY, HOME.
Two hundred reporters sat on gold chairs.
Gordon Bowditch stood at the lectern in a fresh navy suit, with a lawyer at each shoulder.
He looked like a man who had slept eight hours.
"A single engineer," he said, "acting alone, installed an unauthorized board in our units for her own purposes."
"The company was betrayed."
"I was betrayed."
"We are cooperating fully with the police."
The lawyer on his left held up a sheet.
"The engineer is named in the complaint filed this morning," the lawyer said. "Ms. Astrid Quigan."
"I'm here," said Astrid.
She stood up at the back of the room.
Every head turned.
She had a cut across one cheek and a coat that did not match her trousers, and she carried a cardboard tube under her arm.
Micah walked behind her, and next to Micah, in a borrowed black coat, walked Ansel.
