Chapter 5: The Report

The police wanted me at two o'clock the same afternoon.

They gave me a gray room with a table, a recorder and a detective who smelled of cough drops.

Tanya's lawyer sat across from me in a cream suit that cost more than my cane and my coat together.

Beckett stood in the doorway.

"I'll be in the room," he said.

"You will be in the hallway," I said.

"Cora."

"You're a witness and a shareholder. If you sit next to me, they'll say you coached me."

He looked at the detective, who shrugged, and then he stepped back and closed the door so quietly I knew he was angry.

The detective opened a folder.

"Ms. Abbot says you came to her building on Friday and grabbed her arm when she tried to leave. She has a bruise."

"Where?"

"Above the elbow."

"My right hand holds a cane," I said. "I carried a folder in my left. I'd like that written down."

The lawyer smiled.

"You could have set the cane down."

"I could have. The lobby has four cameras. I'd like you to pull the footage and watch it with me."

The smile held.

"We've requested it."

"Good. I've requested it too. Let's see who gets the faster answer."

The detective wrote something.

"Ms. Treacy, I also have to ask about the night at the lounge. The incident that put you in the hospital. Is it your position that Ms. Abbot pushed you?"

"Sixty people watched her do it."
