Chapter 15: Fever
Chak came up out of the fever at three in the morning, soaked to the skin and clear in the head.
The bedroom was dark except for the lamp.
He was in his own bed in the river house, with the net tied back, and a damp cloth was sliding off his forehead.
In the chair beside him, with his glasses pushed up into his hair and his mouth open, Phat was asleep.
A mechanical pencil lay on the floor by his foot.
A chart hung on the chair arm in his small neat writing: temperature, hour, temperature, hour, every thirty minutes, for what looked like three days.
Chak looked at it for a long time.
He had been shot before, and cut, and once poisoned at a wedding.
Each time there had been a doctor, and Mee, and a quiet house.
Nobody had ever sat up with a pencil and counted.
He lay there and let it go through him.
It was not a thought so much as a pressure, a weight settling in the middle of his ribs where the bullet had been.
He wanted to wake the boy.
He wanted to put him in the bed and not let him out for a week.
He wanted, with a clarity that frightened him, to hand over everything he had.
