Chapter 20: The Porch Light

Alister's POV

We came onto Fairview Street at ten past two on Sunday morning with the headlights low.

Odalys had fallen asleep against the window somewhere past Columbus. I had not woken her.

I stopped the truck at the curb between the two houses, and she opened her eyes.

"We're home," she said, and then heard herself, and did not take it back.

"Home," I said.

The street lamp hummed. Every window on the block was dark but one, upstairs at 219.

"Dad's up," I said.

"At two in the morning?"

"He sleeps in the chair when I'm gone. He says he's keeping an eye on the pipes."

She smiled in the dashboard light.

I had the letter in my inside pocket. I had carried it there for three weeks, since the third, against my ribs.

I took it out and held it in my hand.

It was a plain white envelope with her name on the front in my blocky print.

I had meant to give it to her in Chicago, and again at the lake, and again at the Ohio line.
