"Of course we're going," Posy said, folding the letter.
"Kit said all of us. Kit never says all of us unless he means all of us."
"We're going," I said. "She's fourteen weeks old. She has no opinion."
"She has several," said Micah.
The cemetery was cold and bright, with bare oaks and a pale sky.
It was a Thursday.
There were no cameras, no crowd, and nothing to sing.
The groundskeeper took off his cap when he saw the baby asleep against Micah's chest.
"Another one for the family," he said.
Royce waited at the top of the hill in his wool coat.
He stood a few steps off the stone, leaving the rest of the hill to us.
Kit stood in front of the headstone, in a navy coat that fit him, with a manila envelope under his arm.
"You came," he said.
"You asked," said Posy.
He turned red to his ears and looked at the stone.
His grandparents' names were still at the top.
Below them was the same smooth, pale scar, and under it, nothing at all.
"It stays blank," Kit said. "Len said so. I think that's right."
