Chapter 6: The Lab Results
I drove the seventy miles to Harlow Creek at first light in Darian's truck, with my hands wrapped in wet gauze on the wheel and four samples on the passenger seat.
Joan's blood.
The tea from the Redfall pot, still in its jar.
The saucer from her nightstand, wrapped in a napkin.
And a tissue I had pressed to the spilled rosewater on the pantry floor before anyone could mop it up.
Darian had put the keys in my hand, and then taken his hand away so fast I almost dropped them.
I did not look in the mirror when I drove out of the gate.
Mack was already at the clinic's back door in his fleece with a coffee in each hand.
"You look like you got hit by a bus," he said.
"A pantry."
"Is that worse?"
"Yes." I held up the bag. "Can you run these? Off the books. I'll pay you in something."
He took the bag, looked inside, and went quiet.
Mack had grown up in Harlow Creek.
Everyone in town knew about the valley and nobody talked about it.
When a hunter came down with an arrow wound, he came to Mack's clinic at midnight and paid in cash.
"This one's a pack member," Mack said, tapping Joan's tube.
"My aunt."
"All right." He pushed his glasses up. "Give me a few hours. Go eat something."
I ate a bagel on the clinic steps and watched the sun come up over Route 20.
My hands itched.
At noon he came out and sat beside me.
He did not say anything for a minute, and that scared me more than the results could have.
"The tea is clean," he said. "Mostly. Chamomile, lemon balm, what it says on the label."
