The door in the tree opened onto the third floor of Marrow Lane Games.
It was a quarter past four in the morning, and the fluorescent tubes buzzed over a row of dark desks.
Mine was the one by the window.
My monitor was awake, showing a pastel village with a bell tower and a Gate Tree standing open.
Behind me, people were sitting on the carpet.
The nurse had a wrist in each hand, taking pulses.
The old man was staring at his own fingers.
Grover had lowered himself onto the floor with his back to the printer and was laughing with his hand over his mouth.
"Phones," the nurse said, in a voice that carried.
"Has anyone got a phone?"
"I need an ambulance, a police officer, and somebody who can find coffee."
Mine was in my hoodie pocket, with eleven percent battery.
