Chapter 23: Ruling
At nine o'clock Tuesday morning the judge read her ruling without once raising her eyes.
My mother sat in the second row in her good wool coat.
Marcy sat beside her with a bag of cinnamon rolls on her knees, which the bailiff had decided not to see.
Leland stood at the left table with a new lawyer at his shoulder and a face the color of paper.
"The petition to annul is dismissed with prejudice," the judge said.
"Nothing in this record shows a sham."
"The gift in clause eleven was made nine days before the signing."
I felt Jonas's hand tighten on mine under the table.
"The court further finds," she said, "that the petitioner brought this action in bad faith."
"He relied on a perjured witness and a forged exhibit."
"He knew of the trust amendment recorded in the company safe."
"Under its terms, the court declares Leland Thackeray's seat on the board and his shares in the trust forfeit as of this morning."
A sound went through the courtroom, half gasp and half cheer.
The judge raised her gavel.
"The court has also forwarded the record to the State's Attorney."
