Chapter 22: What The Marks Said
The ring split down the middle, and Kaldrith did not die.
Rina stood with both hands clamped on his and watched it happen.
The crack ran from the top of the circle to the bottom, a hairline of white light.
The black marks on either side of it went grey one after another.
They faded.
The last mark, the ninetieth, stayed dark a heartbeat longer than the rest.
Then it too lost its color and became a pale dot on his skin.
The light went out.
The cathedral was silent.
Kaldrith stood in the aisle with his coat burst open and his chest bare, and his eyes were closed, and he was breathing.
In, and out.
In, and out.
"Kaldrith," she whispered.
He opened his eyes.
They were amber, and clear, and for the first time since she had known him they were not ringed with red.
"It is gone," he said.
Elisenne came down the aisle with her robe in her fist and stopped in front of him.
She lifted her hand.
Gold light ran over his skin, and over the faint ring of grey dots.
The dots shifted and shone and formed a line of tiny letters.
She read it, and her eyes filled.
"It says, released by the one who asked," she said. "It is finished. It will never close again."
The cathedral came apart.
It started at the back, a woman crying, a man laughing.
Then every noble in the nave was on his feet and shouting, and above it all the Primate's bell began to ring.
Rina did not hear any of it.
Kaldrith had taken her face in both hands.
He was shaking all over.
"You said you would break it," he said, in a voice that cracked in half. "You said you would break the story."
