I didn't look up from my cards.
I folded, and I let the man beside me ask the question.
"Chicago girl in Milwaukee. What's her name?"
"Lucy something. Paid cash. My girl's sister didn't get a number."
He shrugged and dealt.
I played two more hands and lost both.
I couldn't have told you what was in them.
In the morning Vito called me into his office.
Somebody had already told him. Somebody always did.
"Joe's girl," he said. "Milwaukee. Send two of the boys up."
"I'll go myself," I said. "Your boys don't know her face. I do."
He looked at me over his cigar for a long time.
Then he laughed.
"Still sweet on the checkbook. Fine. Go look."
I drove up that Saturday in Nonno's Buick, ninety miles on I-94 with the windows down.
The sister was a nice girl in a duplex on the South Side with a wedding album on the coffee table.
The seamstress had come to her apartment twice, she said. She'd pinned the dress on the kitchen floor.
"She wouldn't take a tip," she said. "I tried. She said the dress was the tip."
