Chapter 53: The Closed Door
I called Rita that night from the kitchen, after Damiano went up.
She answered on the first ring.
"Lucia."
"Damiano told me," I said. "About your brother. About the garage."
She didn't say anything for a long time.
"Nonno goes to the ten-thirty," she said finally. "He stays after for coffee. Come at ten-forty. Come to the side door."
She hung up.
Sunday morning I left Maddie with Pasquale and told him I was going to the shop.
He looked at the garment bag over my arm. He looked at my face.
"You're a terrible liar," he said. "My wife was a terrible liar too. Go. Come back for lunch."
The cousins drove me to Elmwood Park and parked down the block.
"Donna, we come in with you."
"You sit here and eat a cookie. If I'm not out in an hour, then you come in."
The side door was open before I knocked.
Rita stood there in an old sweatshirt with her curls down and no scarf. She looked about fifteen.
"You knew," I said. "The whole year."
"The whole year."
"You came to work for me knowing."
"I came to see what kind of woman somebody would do that for." She folded her arms. "I wanted to hate you. I was going to quit after a week."
