Chapter 59: I Say So
Behind us somebody leaned on a horn.
The cousin drove through the light without a word.
Dad held my hand the rest of the way, his good one, hard, like I was nine and we were crossing Harlem Avenue.
At the shop he got out on his cane and stood on the sidewalk, looking down Taylor Street at the red awning.
"Don't ever drive me to Elmwood Park, Lulu," he said. "I'd hit him with this."
Then he went upstairs.
On Friday the envelopes came back.
I was in the shop window at ten in the morning, pinning a bride's mother in navy.
A man in a track suit went into the bakery.
Heavy, sunglasses pushed up on his head.
I knew him. I'd run him off this street in June, in front of my daughter's stroller.
He came out of the bakery empty-handed, with the baker in the doorway behind him holding her rolling pin.
"The Don said paid in full," she shouted after him.
He turned around on the sidewalk and spread his arms, so the whole block could hear.
"Mr. Bellanca says Taylor Street pays again the first Friday in October," he said. "He says get used to my face."
