Chapter 22: The Helm
At dusk Teo cast off the Ida May's lines himself.
"Take her out, mija," he said from the dock. "Take the evening."
He did not look at Royce.
He tipped two fingers to the brim of his hard hat and walked away along the steel with his hands in his pockets.
I climbed to the wheelhouse and put my hands on the brass wheel.
I had known wheels like it for four years on other boats.
Royce stood behind me in his black suit, with his jacket off and his sleeves rolled.
I took her out into the channel.
The engines took up their long low note.
The tanks went by white on the right, and the lights came on across the water one by one.
I ran her down to the turning basin at slow ahead and put the bow into the wind.
I dropped the anchor and left the engines idling.
The boat settled.
"Well, Captain," Royce said.
I took a folded paper out of my back pocket and held it out to him.
It was a company form, typed and dated.
He read it by the dash light.
It was a written warning, addressed to him.
The offense was failure to consult an employee.
It was signed M. Escobedo, and under my signature I had added a line in pen, in my own square handwriting.
