Chapter 8: A Table for Three
Colt Brockman invited me to dinner through his cousin.
On Thursday night, in the front seat of his car, Royce read a text off his phone.
"Cousin's treat," he said. "He wants to meet the people I like. His words."
"Do we go?"
"We go. He's a man who likes to show his hand at a table. I'd like to see it."
He parked in the garage under the Galleria and turned off the engine.
I wore the only dress I owned that wasn't black, a dark green one my mother had hemmed.
Royce looked at me in the dim light.
Then he opened the glove box and took out a small velvet pouch.
"I'm going to give you something," he said. "And then you can tell me yes or no."
I opened the pouch.
Inside lay a smooth silver oval as long as my thumb, and a flat black remote.
I knew what it was.
Heat rolled up my neck.
"You want me to wear this to dinner."
"I want you to wear it through dinner. I'll hold this." He took the remote. "And you hold the key."
He touched the small red padlock charm that hung on a thin cord around my throat, which he had put there on Tuesday night.
The little brass key to it hung beside it on the same cord.
"The word is Done," he said. "Any time, at any volume. It ends."
I looked at the egg in my palm.
Something wicked rose in me that had no business being there.
"Turn around," I said.
He turned his head to the window.
I hiked my dress up in the passenger seat, slid my underwear aside, and pressed the egg into myself, slowly.
It was cool and smooth and it slid in without effort, because I was already wet.
