Chapter 11: The First One

Dani's POV

I had a hammer in my hand when Lacey knocked.

The shop door was rolled down, and the knock came at the side door, three soft raps.

I opened it six inches.

She stood in the dark in a gray sweatshirt, with no lipstick and her hair in a rope down her back.

Her eyes were red and swollen, and her hands were empty.

"I'm not going to hurt you," she said. "I came alone. I'd like to say something, and then I'll go."

"You have one minute."

"It'll take longer."

"Then make it quick."

She almost smiled.

I should have shut the door.

But I had been up two nights, with a photograph on my father's bench and a man's truck gone down the road, and I wanted to hear one person tell me the truth.

I let her in.

She did not sit.

She stood by the bench, looking at the dark neon sign on the wall.

"Hoyt doesn't know I'm here," she said. "Boone doesn't either. If either of them finds out, I'm done."

"You were done on Saturday."

"I know what you think I am."

"I think you were in my chair."

"I was," she said. "And I was his girlfriend for two years before you ever met him."

I didn't move.

"We were together since he got his road captain patch," she went on. "I was waitressing at the Dinner Bell. We had a key to each other's places. He was going to ask me in the spring."

"We got married in March."

"I know. I was the one who drove him to the courthouse."

The hammer was heavy in my hand.

"No," I said.

"Dani."

"He told me he'd never been in love."

"He told you what Hoyt told him to say."
