Chapter 8: The Yellow Band
Ramona's POV
I had not planned to stay more than five minutes.
I had planned to see that he was breathing and go home.
The cramp had started on the highway forty minutes earlier, low and sharp, and I had driven the last ten miles with one hand on my stomach.
At the front desk I had told the triage nurse, and she had snapped a yellow band around my wrist and said an obstetrician would see me as soon as a bed opened up.
I had pulled my sleeve down over it and gone looking for Boone.
Now I stood at the foot of his hospital bed with my sleeve down and my heart going hard.
"Sit," Boone said.
"I'm fine."
"You're gray, Ro."
"You drove a motorcycle into a guardrail."
"Yeah."
"Why?"
He looked at the ceiling.
"I don't remember."
"That's a lie."
"Yeah," he said again, and almost smiled.
It was the first time I had seen his face move that way in years, and I hated how much it did to me.
I pulled a chair close and sat.
The bruising was already coming up on his cheekbone, purple under the beard.
"You need water," I said.
I poured it and held the cup to his mouth because his right arm was strapped to his chest.
