Chapter 26: Launch Eve
The night before the launch, a dozen people crowded around Peg's kitchen table.
It sat six.
Peg was at the head of it in her recliner.
Beau and the ladder-rack dad had carried it in from the living room, because she refused to be left out of her own kitchen.
The bug's mother had a legal pad.
The dad with the two little boys had a floor plan of Powell's he'd printed off the internet.
"The event room's on the third floor," he said. "One door in. Elevator and stairs. They're selling it as four hundred seats."
"How many do we have?" I said.
The bug's mother checked her pad.
"Forty-one tickets. Thirty-five dollars each, comes with a signed copy." She made a face. "We bought them the day it was announced. My husband says I'm the only person in America who paid to boo a book."
"You're not booing."
"I'm going to want to."
Peg pointed her fork at her.
"Nobody boos. We sit there like church ladies. Let him read his whole lying chapter." She looked at me. "Then she stands up."
