Chapter 8: What the Doctor Said

Cory's POV

I went to the clinic straight from the lab.

Whitney offered to come, and I told her to go home.

I did not want her in that building.

The receptionist knew me by sight.

For four years I had come here with Beth on Thursday mornings, holding her purse while she signed in.

"I'd like to see the doctor," I said. "Five minutes."

"She's with a patient. Is it about Beth's chart?"

"It's about mine."

I waited in the same gray chair where I had waited with Beth through every cycle.

When the doctor came out, she did not ask me to step inside.

She stood in the hallway with a folder against her chest.

"Cory."

"I need my file sealed," I said. "Everything in my name. I'm told you can restrict who sees it."

"You already restricted it. Four years ago."

"Then make it permanent. Pull the paper copies and put them somewhere nobody can reach."

"I can't destroy a medical record, Cory."

"Then lose it."

She looked at me for a long moment.

"I'm going to pretend you didn't ask that," she said.

"My wife is pregnant."

"I can't discuss your wife."

"I know you can't. I'm telling you."

Something changed in her face, and I didn't like it.

"Then I'll say one thing about your file," she said. "I told you four times to tell her."

"I know what you told me."

"I told you at the first visit and the second year. I told you after the third cycle and again in the fall."
