Chapter 15: The Duel
The moot ring stands on the lake shore behind Stonewater.
It is a circle of twelve standing stones, each as tall as a man, on a floor of packed sand.
Four hundred years of trials of blood had been fought inside it.
The last was forty years ago.
It was dry autumn weather, with a cold wind off the water.
Every person from the hall stood in a ring outside the stones.
The Speaker stood at the north.
"The trial of blood," she said, her old voice carrying clear. "Marshal Ansgar Eckert against Cassia Coleridge. Each may take the form they choose, and carry the steel they wear. There is no yielding but death or the word. Whoever lives, speaks true."
Halvard came through the crowd, still drawn in the face, and pushed something into my hands.
It was a short black blade with a plain bone grip.
"I took it out of the table the night you left," he said. "I've had it on me since. I don't know why. I think I knew I'd owe you."
"Your father told every pack on the radio that I'd stolen it."
"He told a lot of people a lot of things. I'll say that in the Court, too."
I looked at the Warden knife, my mother's only gift, and slid it into my belt.
"Thank you," I said.
"Don't be nice to me."
