Chapter 8: Who You Raised

I opened my eyes.

The room was dark except for the green light of the monitor and a stripe from the hallway.

Imogen sat on the edge of my bed in her coat with her hands folded in her lap.

She wasn't crying.

I had never once seen her face when she wasn't performing, and it was smaller than I'd thought.

"There she is," she said.

"I don't remember anything," I said.

"I know you don't. You said so nicely, in front of everybody."

She crossed one leg over the other.

"I watched your numbers all afternoon, Cora. Every time I said his name your pulse went up, and every time I said Linus, it went through the roof."

I said nothing.

"You remember," Imogen said. "Fine. That makes this easier."

"What do you want?"

"I want to tell you a story, because you're good at stories, you read them to the children on Thursdays." She looked at the dark window. "Nine years ago a college girl got pregnant by a man with a wife."

My heart began to beat in my ears.

"She was twenty-three. She had a stage name and a rented room and no money, and the man told her he'd leave his wife after the baby came."

"Don't."

"His wife couldn't have children. Everyone knew that. She'd lost three before she was thirty, and she cried in the pharmacy aisle where the baby things were."

She let that sit.
