Chapter 13: Pitt Street
Rhett walked down the gangway without looking at either of us.
As he passed his brother he dropped his truck keys on the deck.
They hit the steel with a small, flat sound.
"Rhett," I said.
He kept walking.
His boots rang on the dock planks, and his right leg did not favor itself at all.
Boone stood in the wheelhouse door with both hands hanging open at his sides.
He looked at the keys and not at me.
"Go on after him, ma'am," he said. "He needs you more than I do."
"Pick up the keys, Boone."
He bent and picked them up.
"Drive to my house," I said. "The spare is under the third planter on the porch. Let yourself in and sit in my kitchen."
"I can't be in your house without him."
"You'll be in it when I bring him. Go."
He closed his fist on the keys and came down the gangway ahead of me.
It was the first time I had seen him walk off Miss Lorraine, and he kept his eyes on the planks.
