Chapter 19: Wolf to Wolf

I didn't have time to think.

My body did it for me.

I dropped flat, and the silver-black wolf went over my head with his claws raking the air where my face had been.

He hit the floor behind me and skidded through a bench.

People screamed and scattered.

I was already shifting.

My jeans split.

My mother's scarf caught around my neck, and I let it hang.

Conrad came around.

He was half again my size, and he moved like it.

Behind me, the doors banged open.

I smelled cedar and woodsmoke and fury.

Keir came through the doors as a black wolf, and eighty Black Fork wolves came up the road behind him.

The whole hall went to its feet.

If he crossed that floor, it was a war in front of three Alphas.

I turned my head and snarled at him.

Not at Conrad.

At Keir.

Through the bond I sent everything I had:

Mine.

He stopped dead ten feet inside the doors.

His hackles were up.

His eyes were black.

For one second I thought he wouldn't hold.

Then he sat down on the boards, every muscle shaking, and let me have it.
