Chapter 16: Make Me Pay
"Not here," I said.
Havrik didn't ask what I meant.
He led me out of the hall of names and down a corridor of closed Dar doors to a room at the end, and he stood aside to let me through first.
It was bare.
A low mattress, a lamp, a sea chest, a coat on a hook.
It smelled of him, smoke and warm stone.
The door sealed behind us, and I turned around and hit him.
I hit him in the chest with both fists, and it was like hitting a bulkhead.
"You knew," I said.
"Yes."
"And you stayed."
"Yes."
"Say something else!"
"There is nothing else that is true."
I hit him again, harder, and the sob that tore out of me wasn't what I meant to do.
"I want you to hate me," I said. "Hate me! You've earned it. You've got eleven thousand reasons on a wall. Look at me and hate me."
"I did," Havrik said.
His voice was low and rough.
"For seven years. I said your name in my head every night the way other men say a prayer."
"I wanted to see your face when I said it."
"Then I saw you on a dock in your socks, arguing with a machine about the word late."
