Chapter 14: Not a Shield

His bed was in the east wing, behind a door the housekeeper had never been told to open.

I walked in without knocking at midnight.

I wore his gray T-shirt, which I had taken from the guest room chair.

He sat on the edge of the mattress in the lamplight, in his trousers, with his elbows on his knees.

The ring box lay open and empty on the quilt beside him.

The ring was in my pocket.

I had carried it there for nine days.

Tonight I took it out and set it on the nightstand and stepped back.

"You're taking it off," Gio said.

"I never put it on."

"Raisa."

"The ring is a shield until the baby comes," I said.

"That was your first term."

"I remember the terms."

"It isn't a shield anymore," I said.

"Your father knows who I am, and so do you.

"All a ring shields me from now is the truth about why you wear one."

He raised his head.

His eyes were red and tired and very steady.

"Then what is it?" he said.

"You tell me," I said.

"You're the one who's good at terms."

He stood up.

He was a full head taller than me, bare to the waist.

I watched him choose not to cross the room.

"Nobody falls in love," he said.

"That was the second one.

"I said it, and you said it, and I've been lying every day since the dock."

I held very still.

"Have you," I said.

"I lay awake angry for two weeks," he said.

"After you told me about the truck outside the gate.
