Chapter 20: Annual Meeting
The annual meeting was held in the Draycott Hotel ballroom.
It was the same room with the same two hundred round tables.
Now the tables were pushed back and rows of folding chairs filled the floor.
Nine hundred shareholders had been mailed a proxy card.
Almost four hundred came in person, in good coats and bad knees, to see what the family would do to itself.
Morton sat on the dais behind a long table with the board.
He wore a charcoal suit and a calm face.
Four lawyers sat behind him in a row.
Two security men stood at the doors.
He had not been charged with anything.
His lawyers called the recording a fabrication, and the prosecutor was still waiting on the lab.
I sat in the second row between Rhona and the housekeeper in the purple cardigan.
Poppy was home with Rhona's mother, building a fort from the pie boxes.
I had refused to bring her.
Not today.
The mailman, on my other side, polished his glasses with a handkerchief.
"I've never been to one of these," he whispered.
