Chapter 18: The Doctor

The doctor was an old man with a shaking beard, who came to the penthouse with a leather bag and asked no questions.

Sakaki lay on the long sofa with his shirt cut away.

The doctor irrigated the wound, packed it, and put in nineteen stitches while Sakaki stared at the ceiling and recited the starting lineup of the Hanshin Tigers from 1985.

"Missed the liver," said the doctor, snipping the thread. "By a thumb. He is a lucky, stubborn man."

"I am a driver," Sakaki said, through his teeth. "I am neither."

Shiori held his hand.

He pretended not to notice.

When the doctor had gone, and the big man had fallen asleep with a blanket over his chest, Tatsuya stood at the glass wall with his back to the room.

Shiori came and stood beside him.

The city lay below in pale afternoon light.

"You'll want to burn them," he said, without turning. "The copies. If it saves Koji."

"I'm not going to burn them."

"Shiori..."

"You said I get every plan. Here's mine." She took out her phone, scrolled to the number, and held it up. "I'm calling Hirano. I'm telling her everything. The marriage, the drawer, the key. You."

His head turned, slowly.

"That ends it for you," he said. "The second she knows, I'm the husband who fed a prosecutor. It will be said in court that the evidence was arranged. A good lawyer could make a mess of it."
