The blade went through Tatsuya's palm and he did not let go of it.
Blood ran down his wrist, bright against the black sleeve, and dripped onto the white tatami.
His father pulled, and the steel sliced deeper, and Shiori's husband's face did not change.
"Let go, Father," he said quietly.
"You ungrateful, ungrateful..."
"It's over."
He twisted his wrist.
The tanto spun out of the old man's fingers.
Tatsuya caught it by the hilt with his other hand and let it fall on the mat at his feet.
Two officers got Genichiro by the arms.
He didn't struggle.
He stood with his head up and his white robe stained, and looked down at his son's ruined hand, and then at Shiori.
"I would have loved you," he said to her, gently. "As one of mine."
"I know," Shiori said. "That was the problem."
Hirano stepped forward in her grey coat and held out a pair of handcuffs.
"Genichiro Kuzunoki," she said. "You are under arrest on suspicion of the abduction of a witness, of money laundering, and of murder. I will read the remainder in the car."
