Chapter 23: The Year
On the evening the year ran out, Shiori's mother closed the tea shop at five and hung a sign on the blue curtain that said "Private."
She had pushed three tables together in the front, and covered them with a white cloth, and put out every good dish she owned.
Hirano came in her grey suit and brought a bottle of plum wine from a friend in Chiba.
Aizawa came with his mother, who was ninety-one and did not know what year it was, and who patted Tatsuya's scarred hand with perfect approval and told him he was a nice boy.
Sakaki came in his green polo shirt and ate eleven dumplings.
"Delicious," he said, with real feeling.
Shiori's mother set a dish of dumplings in front of Tatsuya, and Shiori saw him look at the first one.
It had a creditable pleat.
"You made these?" said her mother.
"Yesterday. In Shiori's kitchenette. Fourteen tries."
"Humph," said her mother, and ate it, and said nothing else, and put another on his plate.
Hirano lifted her glass.
"To the Kuzunoki matter," she said. "Conviction on all counts. And to Takamura, who wants her desk back on Monday."
