Chapter 23: Testimony
Leo came across the stage at a dead run, and his cards went everywhere.
I got down on my knees, and he hit me so hard we both nearly went over.
I held on to him with my face in his curls.
He smelled like my mother's laundry soap.
"Grandma said to watch your hands," he said into my neck. "You weren't even scared."
"I was so scared, baby."
"Your hands weren't," he said.
Over his head, two Atlantic City police officers came up the steps at the side of the stage.
Garson Langan held his wrists out to them before they asked.
Five weeks later I sat in a small wood-paneled room in the county courthouse in Mays Landing.
There were twenty-three people on the grand jury, in three rows of chairs.
The county prosecutor stood by a table with a box of Garson Langan's records on it.
He'd spent six years building his trial, and the police had found all of it in my old surveillance room.
Time cards, phone logs, the dock gate log, the 911 call and the operator log were all in that box.
