Chapter 9: Snow in Her Hair
The hot tub sat on the cabin deck under a sky full of falling snow, and the water was so hot it hurt.
I sank into it up to my chin, naked, and the cold air bit my shoulders while the steam poured off the surface in clouds.
"Lord," I said.
"Oh, Lord."
"Don't fall asleep," Leif said.
He lowered himself in across from me, long and white and shivering, and his sandy hair froze into spikes in seconds.
"That's how people end up in the paper."
Nils climbed in on my left and filled half the tub.
The water rose and slopped over the edge into the snow.
Gunnar and Dale stood at the deck rail in coats with beers in their hands.
They had given us the tub first.
They had not gone inside.
"We'll be along," Dale said, from the dark, and I felt his eyes on my skin.
I leaned back on the bench.
The jets pounded at the small of my back, and the snow melted on my face.
Nils's shoulder pressed against mine, huge and hot.
He had not said anything since the car.
He looked at me through the steam with his soft brown eyes.
"Come here," I said.
He moved close.
I turned my body toward him and put my arms around his neck, and I kissed him with the snow falling on both our faces.
The first time, he had kissed me with a careful mouth.
This time he kissed me hungrily, with no care at all.
His big hand slid up my ribs under the water and covered my breast.
His thumb flicked over my nipple, and I gasped into his mouth.
"Better," I said.
"I've been thinking about this for a week," Nils said, hoarsely.
"I couldn't sleep."
"Don't think," I said.
"Touch me."
