Chapter 20: Frank's Girl
I stopped ten feet from the wheelchair.
The old boss's head turned toward me on his neck, slowly.
His eyes were clear.
"That's far enough," said Padraig. "Hands out of the sleeves, if you would."
I held my hands out, empty.
The knife lay taped along my left forearm, and the wind came cold off the water through my jacket.
Behind Padraig, a man sat in the SUV with the window down and a pistol resting on the sill.
"You wanted to talk," I said.
"I did."
"So talk."
He took his time.
He leaned on the handles of the chair and looked out at the pilings.
He spoke gently, telling the story of a happy summer.
"My brother was going to retire," he said. "Did you know? Eleven months ago. He meant to hand everything to Malachy, and the docks, and the loans, and the books. A man who opens the books finds out where the money went."
"Yours."
"Twenty years of it. A little here, a little there. What's a brother for?"
He patted the old man's shoulder.
The old man's eyes did not leave his face.
"So I put a little something in his tea," said Padraig. "Slowly, over the autumn. Nothing so crude as poison. Something to make a strong man tired, then forgetful, then ill. A stroke, the doctors would say. The sort of thing that happens to a man of sixty-five."
