Chapter 23: Not Locked In
Ewan asked at breakfast, in front of Dorrie, Garth and a plate of eggs.
"Well?" he said.
Kit chewed his toast.
"Well what?"
"It's tomorrow."
Garth put his coffee down very carefully and looked at the ceiling.
Dorrie, at the stove, stopped moving.
"Ask me properly," Kit said.
Ewan got up.
He walked round the table, in a plain grey sweater, with egg on his sleeve, and dropped to one knee on Dorrie's clean flagstones.
"Kit Sorrel," he said. "Will you stay."
"Not buy. Not keep. Stay."
"Yes," Kit said.
Garth clapped, once, slowly.
Dorrie said something about her floors and began to cry into a dishcloth, and Ewan stayed on his knee a moment longer than he needed, with his forehead against Kit's stomach.
"Get up," Kit murmured. "You look ridiculous."
"I'm a king."
"Get up, Your Majesty."
They moved him out that afternoon.
It did not take long, because he owned a canvas jacket, a grey henley, a letter opener and a pair of boots.
Garth carried the lot in one hand and complained all the way.
"I've carried this man's whole life up three flights of stairs," he told Dorrie, "and it weighs less than the king's coat."
"The king's coat has a lot of lining," Kit said.
"The king's coat has a lot of opinions."
They climbed to the top floor, the four of them, and the door stood open at the end of the hall.
Kit stopped on the threshold.
Daylight came in through the barred window in thin stripes.
