Chapter 9: Cutbank
Kit's shoulder had closed to a puckered pink star by morning.
Wolves healed fast, but silver left a mark that took its time.
He sat at the dead king's desk, working the stiffness out of the joint, when Ewan came in with his hands wrapped in white gauze.
Neither of them mentioned the night before.
"Garth has put four men on the roof," Ewan said. "And two on your door."
"Guarding me or me?"
"Both."
"The seal on that bolt was the Council's."
"The seal on that bolt was a copy of the Council's." Ewan's voice was flat. "Anyone with a forge can make one."
"You don't believe that."
"I believe I'll find out." He stopped in the middle of the rug. "Question."
"You're really going to ask it tonight."
"Why was my father smiling?"
Kit laid his hands on the desk.
"You want to know what I think about when I hear you ask?" he said. "Cutbank."
Ewan's face did not change.
"The camp on the Clark Fork," Kit said. "Eleven rogues, a few trucks, a smokehouse. Nobody who'd hurt a deer."
