Chapter 30: What He Gave Up
The side gate was chained now.
A new padlock hung on it, brass and bright, and a sign beside it warned of video surveillance.
Ansel looked at it, and then at me.
"I have a different way in," he said.
"Of course you do."
He led me along the cove wall, ankle-deep in the cold flats, to a place where the fence post had rotted away at the base.
He lifted the chain link.
I ducked under.
He followed, and we walked up through the weeds in the dark without a light.
The shed door still slid open on its rusty rail.
Inside, the hull waited, a long pale shape in the gloom.
He set his flashlight on an upturned bucket so that the beam lay along the keel, and we sat down on the cradle's edge with our shoulders almost touching.
"I wanted to bring you here," I said.
"Why?"
"Because it's where it started. And because I think I want to hear whatever you came to tell me down the drive. In here."
He was quiet.
"I've been writing it in my head for two days," he said.
