Chapter 19: Hands on the Glass

We worked until the light changed.

It was a long night.

I stood at Marta's table in my socks, with a lamp pulled down low over the glass, and Ansel stood behind me with his hands over mine.

He had said the first rule was to hold it loose.

"You are strangling it," he said.

"It's a cutting wheel."

"It is a very small animal. Let it run."

I loosened my fingers.

He guided my hand along a steel ruler, and the wheel bit a pale line into the surface of the red glass and made a soft zip like a seam opening.

I breathed out.

"That is the score," said Ansel. "Now we break it."

"Do I tap it?"

"You turn it over and tap behind the line, lightly, until the crack walks."

I tapped.

The crack crept along the glass like a thought, and the piece fell away clean into my palm.

It was a small curved sliver, the color of old wine, with a perfect edge.

"I made that," I said.

"You did."

"I cut a piece of Marta's window."

"You did," he said, and his voice was not steady.

He had not taken his hands off mine.

They were warm and rough over the backs of my fingers, and I could feel his breath on my hair.

For the first time that night I stopped thinking about the glass.

"Neve," he said.
